The Christmas Offensive (rant) December 24, 2005

Posted by Matt Hurst in Uncategorized.

The stressful season has been upon us, and as I christen the eve at night some words roar through my mind. I simply cannot keep these things to myself in this indulgent holiday. Even if it makes baby Jesus cry.
Some people have been going around talking about the “war on christmas”, actually taking offense to the expression “Happy Holdiays”. Of they’re fools exploiting the holiday to criticize the ACLU by forgetting that free expression is a street with infinite directions. But there are worse exploitations yet. Some pro-birth (because if they were pro-life they’d encourage safe-sex) folks use the holiday to remind us that an abortion might have prevented the birth of our savior. Never mind the miraculous birth they believe in, this is about exploiting the holyday for political purposes. The natural conclusion is that it prevents the second coming, but does it necessarily. I mean, Mary wasn’t even stoned to death like she was supposed too.
Let’s imagine a second coming of Jesus Christ, ushering in the final showdown between all good and evil. Wouldn’t we kill him again if we had the chance? Where most people who saw “the Passion of the Christ” saw christ’s suffering at the hands of others (and forgot that he accepted his death, the central tenant of christianity of how Christ saved), I saw religious leaders conspiring to destroy a threat to their power. No, I didn’t see the chosen people of Israel killing their messiah, but religious leaders of an incosequencial faith taking out the threat. I saw the equilviant of the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Falwells, and the George Bushes and James Dobsons on screen instead of the anti-semitism it was meant to inspire. They don’t object to the death penalty and they condemn those that challenge their control. If anything, a second coming would actually make them irrelevant, and they would have to do anything possible to eliminate his criticism and challenge to the status quo. They might kill him too.

Have a Happy Holiday season (in any way you choose to use it). Shalom.
