On the risk of sounding redundant (like another mainstream media also-ran), it has been 3 years since the invasion and subsequent occapation of Iraq began…

And what have we gained since then?
(no, really, I want to an answer to help me sleep at night in spite of the blood from the ongoing civil war hand on my hands)

we’ve gained a really deep awareness of ourselves.

in a very ugly sort of way, i think. not even a good or bad thing, just.. something. sort of like we’ve been spending this century plumbing the depths of our soul as a nation. we’re horrified at the results, but the reaction will be a little delayed…much like how vietnam spilled over into the mid and late ’70s.

or at least, i hope we have. it’s what I’VE gained.
