An open call to “indie rock” July 19, 2006

Posted by Matt Hurst in dialogues.

indie rock?
hey, it’s me Mattu. no, i’m fine.
mmhhmm, yeah.
listen i’m just calling because i was talking to some friends the other day, and they say you’ve sold out.
i don’t know, it’s just…
i didn’t want to say anything, but we’ve been friends for awhile and-
hey now, you have no room to speak about hip-hop like that, he has money problems.
can you hear yourself?
god damnit, i haven’t heard somebody so wrapped up in themselves before!
Well, maybe if you made something a little more constructive.
Wait, what’s that i hear in the background?
Another goddamn xylophone!
no i like the xylophone, but can’t you stop doing that when i’m listening to you.
of course i like acoustic sounds, but you used to have imagination.
hey now, i like experimenting with new things, but using acoustic instrumentation is not beating down the walls of corporate conformity.
no, you sound like a james taylor cover band.
i don’t care if you put it over a dance beat!
i’m sorry, i can’t keep putting you on mash-ups anymore if you keep using this tone with me.
of course i support the scene, but you sound like an ipod commercial waiting for the call from steve jobs.
i can’t take kind of bullshit anymore!
call me when you have something interesting to say.
(fucking sellout)

best entry ever.

who’s on the new ipod commercial?

i heard spoon on a car commercial, or something the other day…

Such a funny, clever Matthew.

thank you! i have no idea, but it’s probably another song they’ve ruined for me via obnoxious dancing.

But i think you know what i’m talking about. I can remember the disallusionment when people started calling “Such Great Heights” an Iron & Wine song, shortly after he covered it for an M&Ms commercial

i must say i wrote this for a conversation, but it was too good not to share with a larger audience

i don’t love iron&wine/suchgreatheights/postalservice, but m&m’s? how? why?

6. adam_alligator - July 19, 2006

all i see is MATTU, and it looks FINNISH!

there were a couple of indie kids at TJs the other night. you know the types….boys in girlpants, girls with skunk-striped hair and torn jeans, and cigarettes being stubbed out in jam containers. (not to mention, very poor tipping.) and all that OH-SO-snobbish-yet-casually-disheveled attitude!

it reminded me that there is nothing redeemable about “indie rock,” and by that i mean both the MySpace perversion of the term and by the continued existence of lou barlow.

call me an idealist, but everybody needs to listen to REALICIDE and mellow way the heck out.

it is a little known fact that finland has the world’s finest dialog comedy writers

9. skewgee - July 21, 2006

why must everything in the comment seem more quotable than my entry?

ps – can i quote you on that?

10. lostininerspace - July 21, 2006

I miss you
where the hell are you in my life!!!!
